Pastor Miles McPherson (Rock Church San Diego) on Huckabee

milesmcphersonPastor Miles McPherson appeared on Mike Huckabee’s FOX News show this weekend to talk about how professional athletes as well as anyone else can make it in spite of temptations to do wrong.  In light of retired pro quarterback Steve McNair’s adultery and consequent murder, Huckabee asked Miles how he was able to make it from professional athlete to a pastor.

From cocaine user to Pastor

Miles shared how as a young professional player he was into cocaine and living life quite haphazardly until he met some Christian football players who shared the gospel with him.  It was his acceptance of Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior that changed his desire from cocaine to never using it again.  He also married his girlfriend and they are still together nearly 25 years later!

Your sin will find you out!

Miles gave some advice about marriage and that was simply not to commit adultery. “Sin will find you out” he said alluding to Steve McNair’s tragic ending to his life, a phrase also found in the bible (Numbers 32:22-23).  He also shared how the athletes need people who can tell them what they need to hear and not what they want to hear.  They need very real people who would confront them respectfully.

Pastor Miles interview with Mike Huckabee I thought was very good and very straightforward. Miles talked about the need for Christ in one’s life and the need to confront sin and not to continue in it.  He shared that we are all human and can fall into all kinds of temptation but having people who can tell the truth to us instead of surrounding ourselves with “yes” people would be most beneficial.

Advice for the married: be faithful to your spouse!

When asked by Mike Huckabee what is the primary thing he can say to professional athletes, Miles answered “to the ones who are married I would say to love your wife and be faithful to your wife.” He says that everyone will stand before the King one day, a message that was told at the end of Michael Jackson’s memorial when the pastor said, “the King of Pop will now bow his knees to the King of Kings.” Miles continues by saying that none of us are God and never will be God! We have to live by the rules as everybody else!

Great story of how Pastor Miles McPherson came to God and the only sad part of this interview is the realization that Steve McNair died before correcting his mistakes while Miles lived to correct his.

Prop 8 upheld: Anti-gay marriage but not anti-gay

Pastor Miles McPherson on CNN discussing Prop 8: glad for the ruling but feels bad for the 18,000 that stay married creating further confusion; says he’s anti-gay marriage but not anti-gay.

Update 5/27: Pastor Miles vs Comedienne Carol Leifer on Prop 8 on the Larry King Show

By a 6 to 1 vote the California Supreme Court ruled in favor of Proposition 8 while maintaining as legal the 18,000 gays who did marry before the law took effect. And why am I not thrilled about this decision? Is it because of the fighting legally, politically, socially, and spiritually that will continue forever?

I don’t know about many of you who read this, but I’m tiring of the fighting. But I will always be against gay marriage no matter how mentally and spiritually drained I become because of this ongoing conflict. Gay marriage is immoral and no matter the cry for equality, there will never be an acceptance by the general population of those immoral unions.

Should legally married gays be accepted in the Christian church?

A San Diego pastor, Jim Garlow was asked on TV news if Prop 8 would be overturned, would he recognize gay marriages in his church. His answer was rightfully no! His reason he gave was because simply it was not acceptable biblically and no gay couples would be welcomed in his church as a marriage, but would be quite welcomed as individuals.

That’s the stance any pastor should take whether or not gay marriages are legal in their state/country or providence. Any pastor should have the courage that the young 21 year old beauty queen (now 22) Carrie Prejean took that day she decided it was better not to compromise God’s standard for marriage to win an earthly crown. Too many pastors are shying away from God’s clear principles regarding marriage. Many are turning their backs completely on God’s word with their concern to please people rather than God.

Can a person be anti-gay marriage without being anti-gay?

Totally! I just completed two-weeks of traveling which included dining with my lesbian cousin and her live-in girlfriend.  I also treated my gay nephew for dinner while visiting San Francisco to bring my daughter home from college.

These individuals know my stance on their lifestyles very well as we have had some pretty heated discussions regarding homosexuality but that didn’t change the fact that I love them very much!  Anti-gay marriage, anti-homosexuality doesn’t mean we hate the person involved and this is something that many people don’t understand.

Of course, many LGBT people will always believe that if you don’t accept their lifestyles, then you automatically hate them.  Nothing much we can do about that no matter how kind we may treat them otherwise.  And if we don’t watch ourselves, we too can get caught up in bitterness and hate if we allow the animosity of the “haters” to affect us.

So yes, after seeking spiritual replenishment through God’s word, the bible and much prayer, I will continue my effort in supporting marriage between a man and a woman only while not being hateful towards the LGBTQ person!

Miss California – a S.T.A.N.D. for God!

carrie_pastor23

Today I went to the 8am service at our church, the Rock Church San Diego, the first of five services that Miss California, Carrie Prejean would appear.  I’m glad I went to this service because of it being the first, she was a bit more emotional showing her very real pain from the confusion and loneliness she experienced at the early stages of her ordeal.   The 8am wasn’t taped, so it was also a warm-up for Carrie to prepare her for our live viewings at the 10am and 12noon services. I knew we’d be in for a treat but the service was even better that I imagined!  (click on link at the end of the post for the video)

Didn’t plan to get involved with the same-sex marriage controversy

To make a long story short, I was most struck by the way GOD had His hand in this entire event!  Carrie by no means planned to get involved in a same-sex marriage controversy.  She simply wanted to participate in a beauty pageant to win and represent our country in the Miss Universe competition.  But God had a different path for her to take!

With the controversial answer to the just as controversial question, the abrupt flight out to New York to face the media, traveling alone and crying to God for direction and the “chance” of Carrie’s very own pastor going to New York also at the same time but on a different flight – was nothing short of a miracle in the making!

Pastor Miles McPherson didn’t know of Carrie, the pageant or that Carrie even went to his church!

Pastor Miles not even hearing of the pageant and not knowing who Miss California was, ended up getting in touch with Carrie after being called by his executive assistant that a young lady in a major public distress needed prayer.  Realizing the urgency of the situation, Miles met up with Carrie and her mother and prepped her for the day long media blitz (he went on every single interview she was asked to appear).  An absolute answer to Carrie’s prayer!

To get the feel of the complete message, you can still go to the website and watch the video of the 10 or 12′oclock service.  The 8am service had most of us without a dried eye as we felt Carrie’s pain, but by the next few services she was more composed.

The boldness of the biblical beauty queen, Queen Esther

Pastor Miles wonderfully tied this lesson of boldness to another “beauty queen,” and that was Queen Esther of the book of Esther in the bible.  A woman who became a queen as a result of a beauty contest with the winner becoming the king’s wife.  But it was this queen’s boldness in the face of possible death that pastor preached on today.

In an attempt to save the Jewish people who all were being sentenced to death, Queen Esther went before the King unannounced  – which meant certain death according to their laws.  But her response to the possible death sentence?

“… And so I will go to the King, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish!” Esther – 4:16(b)

The boldness of Queen Esther! For the sake of her people she boldly went to the king who was quite taken by the queen’s actions and ended up sparing the life of the Jewish people.

Miss California faced with a less formidable situation, yet nevertheless still trying, boldly went against the gay agenda of the vindictive beauty judge and kept her ground throughout with God’s guidance and help from Pastor Miles!

Always STAND up for God!

Great sharing of her story by Carrie Prejean and an equally great sermon by Pastor Miles with lessons we can all apply to our lives daily!

carrie_pastor1

Pastor Miles taught that we must stop cowaring for the sake of political correctness and take a stand for God.  Carrie was an example of this boldness  while having political correctness take a back seat.

Here is the meaning to the acronym S.T.A.N.D. taught by Pastor Miles in today’s sermon:

S – stare down courage – be able to stare intimidation in the face and not worry  about being politically correct!

T- trust in the truth and not a lie; live the truth of the bible and don’t compromise it.

A- accept God’s sovereign provision – God will provide for whatever situation we may find ourselves; encouragement

N – never fear man over God; pursue the heavenly crown and not earthly rewards

D – die to self – putting God first in all things!

The Fine Line Rally Video ('Yes' on Proposition 8)

The Fine Line Rally on ‘Yes for Proposition 8″ video below if you missed it. Listen to Pastor Miles sermon on marriage, and the panel as they answer these six questions:

  1. “Same-sex marriage doesn’t affect me so why should I be against it?”
  2. “You’re trying to impose your religion, what about separation of church and state?”
  3. “Heterosexuals have the right to get married according to their orientation, but homosexuals – why shouldn’t they have the same right?”
  4. “Half of marriages end up in divorce, so why not allow same-sex marriages? Maybe they’ll do better statistically.”
  5. “Isn’t it true that kids need a loving family regardless whether its a mother or father?”
  6. “If you care about your gay friends, you would want them to be happy and that might mean being able to marry the person they love. So telling them they can’t be married isn’t very loving is it?”
